Make shipping your ecommerce "superpower"

Shipping is one area that is often overlooked by new merchants until it becomes a problem. If your store scales quickly, that problem will become massive and undo all of your hard work.

Q: Do you need to have the carrier-calculated shipping feature activated to use Starshipit or eShip?

A: No, not to use these services. However, if you want to display your negotiated shipping rates from that carrier to customers at checkout, then yes, you do. The Advanced Shopify plan, Shopify Plus, and any annual plan all come with carrier-calculated shipping. If you aren’t on one of those plans, then carrier-calculated shipping can be added to your account for an additional $20 USD per month.

Q: How do you suggest to add rural charges for NZ?

A: If your shipping with CourierPost (NZ Post) they recommend having a separate rural flat rate set up in your store. If you’re using their eShip solution, a rural address will be automatically flagged and you won’t need to add a rural prepaid ticket.

Choice at Checkout

Give your customers more choice when it comes to how they want their order shipped. If you can add live estimates at checkout, this will cushion any shipping objection as your customer will know precisely what they are paying for and when the goods should arrive. 


Remember what Hawk said at 16.28 “no one got into ecommerce because they loved printing shipping labels...” If you are spending more than 1 hour a day on your dispatch, I recommend automating using a freight solution. This will free up your time. 

Shipping notifications

One of the most opened emails from merchants are transactional notifications. This is unsurprising as your customers want to know where their order is. Taking control of these notifications with your branding, and your brand message is overlooked by most merchants.

StarshipIT and eShip offer email and SMS notifications that you can customise with your brand, you can take this another step further by branding the tracking and delivery web page
too. NZ Post offer email and SMS Parcel Notifications that are sent as your parcel moves through their network and include features like Parcel Leave which is where you can tell your courier where to safely leave your parcel.

Have a returns policy

Get more loyalty with a really robust and well thought out returns policy. This helps build trust with your brand, and with the help of freight solutions like eShip and Starshipit, you can print out and send return labels with your existing orders. You will not be charged unless the return label is actually used.

Under promise and overdeliver

I use eShip for my online store, and if my courier picks my order up before 3pm that day, my customer should receive that order anywhere in NZ the next day, maybe the day after. However, I am human, and so are my staff, and so is the courier. So in my shipping options, I underpromise by setting the expectation to (2 to 4 working days)

Set expectations

In the shipping settings on Shopify, it defaults to “standard shipping”. What does that mean?” How long is standard shipping? Being able to communicate to your customer with or without an integrated freight solution is really important to help cushion any objection they might have at check out.

I know as a customer which one of these options below I would pick. I see what courier company is coming to my house and how long I should expect it to take for my order to arrive. 

Clean up your notifications

Shopify comes with a bunch of transactional notifications that inform your customer about changes that are happening to orders. If you know HTML, you can go to settings, then notifications, and make adjustments accordingly. I don’t know anything about HTML, so instead, I use an app called OrderlyEmails.  

Essentially OrdelyEmails is a design tool that helps you to effortlessly customise the emails that Shopify is sending for your store; for example, the order confirmation email sent to all customers when they make a purchase.

The app does not send any emails itself but instead upgrades your store’s plain default email notifications with much more professional and effective designs.
